Getting Started with Scinapse
To Access Scinapse, go to Scinapse(dot)io, and sign up for an account. Scinapse offers an option to sign up with google mail, facebook and an ORDCID account.
Familiarise yourself with the dashboard and customise settings according to your preferences. It is important to note that creating an account is recommended and essential because of the following reasons;
- It saves past searches and notifies you of new papers that fit your research interests.
- Papers of interest can be bookmarked and organised into collections.
- Scinapse enhances collaboration tools, enabling researchers to create and join research groups, connect with fellow researchers, and share papers and insights within the platform.
- Your account activities and preferences are used to provide personalised recommendations for related papers and authors.

Navigating Scinapse
After clicking the search button, Scinapse displays the result page to access various articles related to your search. At the top of the page, there are options to search by the name of Authors, Journals, and Fields to see the trends search of the publications based on your topic.
Clicking Authors who have written something related to your topic, their h-index, the number of publications written by them and the total amount of time their publications have been cited are all displayed. Authors can also be filtered by their research field, country, affiliation and so on. You can go further to sort the rest by relevance, h-index, personal impact factor and publication count. You can also click on them to further see more about them.
Clicking Journals show the journals related to your search. The results are categorised automatically, for example as seen in the picture, when “depression and mental health” was searched and Journals was clicked, it displayed topics like “criminal behaviour and mental health, journal of psychiatric and mental health Nursing, personality and mental health.” The results can further be sorted by relevance, publication count and impact factor.
Click the topic that addresses your search and various journals will be displayed. As seen in the picture below you can choose, Analytics, Citation Analytics, Top Papers or All Papers. Analytics includes how well it trends per year, the distribution affiliation to universities and distribution counts in various countries and the same goes with the citation analytics. You can choose to see the top papers and choose the publications within three, five or seven years range.
Alternatively, click All papers. And to make things easier, the results can be further sorted by the most cited, newest or oldest. And to further narrow your search, you can enter keywords depending on your research. Scinapse is amazing because of its capabilities that help you narrow down your search and gain access to the most relevant documents.
Return to the result page to find the article that best meets your needs. Scinapse provides the opportunity to filter the results based on the year range, journal name, and topic right away. You can now sort by most relevant, most recent, or most cited.

Save Papers
You can save a paper that you find interesting on Scinapse for future reference. Simply click the “Save button” below the journal.
This results in the creation of a personalised reading list or collection of publications that may be accessed later. Papers that have been saved can be sorted, shared with other researchers, or exported as a citation list.
Access your saved papers by simply clicking the icon shown in the picture below.
Any new paper can be added to an existing collection, new collections can be formed, and collections can be shared or exported as RIS, BibTeX, or CSV.
Scinapse Author Explorer:
When doing your research, you can access authors who have written journals relating to your search. But Scinapse has an author explorer that allows users to explore and browse authors based on their research field, affiliation, or country. It enhances the research experience by providing valuable insights into the academic community.
Author Explorer on Scinapse helps to discover authors who are at the forefront of their respective fields or authors whose works align with your interests. The list can further be filtered by research field, affiliation, or country and sorted by their h-index, personal impact factor and publication. Therefore if this feature is utilised, users can gain valuable insights into the work and expertise of researchers across various disciplines.
An example is in the picture below, select the research field option, search the fields and select them. When searching for a word in conjunction with another, do not search separately, for example, if you want to search about art history, search “history of art” or “art, history” and the available topics will be displayed but do not go “history” first then “art” later.
You can further filter to your taste and click on any author to explore their works.
Read open accessed PDF:
Scinapse provides access to full-text articles in PDF format whenever available. To read a PDF, look for the “PDF” indicator or link associated with the paper. Clicking on it will open the PDF version of the article, allowing you to read and download it for offline use.
Easy Citation:
Scinapse provides a feature that helps generate citations for papers in various citation styles. When viewing a paper’s details, look for the “Cite” button or option below the paper.
Recieve Email Elerts
Scinapse offers email alerts to update you on the latest research in your field of interest. To set up email alerts, configure your notification preferences by clicking the “create alert” button.
You can choose to receive alerts based on specific keywords. Whenever new papers matching your interests are published, you will receive email notifications. Click on “setting” to delete previous keywords or add to them.
Also, access the keyword alert option by clicking the upper right corner of your screen, which is your display picture.
Favourite a Paper: To mark a paper as a favourite or to express your interest in it, Scinapse offers a “Favorite feature”. Click on the “Favorite” button or icon associated with the paper you want to save as a favourite. This allows you to easily find and revisit your favourite papers anytime
The History Feature:
The history feature on Scinapse keeps track of the search and browsing history within the platform. It allows you to revisit your previous searches and view the papers that have been previously accessed. This feature can be useful for referencing past research or for easily retrieving papers you have recently viewed.
